D.I.Y Moon Sand Recipe

fghjkIf you are familiar with the brand name “moon sand”, you know that it is ridiculously priced.

So I created my own substitute recipe that only cost $2.48

 2 cups All Purpose Flour

1/3 Cup Corn Starch

3 Tbsp. Sweet almond oil/Olive oil

2 Tbsp. Castor oil

Powdered colorant {Optional} absolutely do NOT use liquid food coloring! It will cause the mix to mold.

Directions: In a large mixing bowl, mix dry ingredients together until well combined.

In a separate bowl; measure out your oils. Gradually mix the oils into the dry ingredients. Once well mixed, add the colorant of your choice. I used Bath Bomb Blue Powder Color from whole sale supplies plus. There you’ve just made your own moon sand, how does that feel? Be sure to store this in an air tight container. Please keep in mind that (like play dough) this is not mess free, so I strongly suggest playing with it outside or at the table.

All the kids had fun shaping, squeezing, and pressing this mixture into molds.

She made a scoop of Ice Cream.DSC06076DSC06077DSC06085Sarah quickly discovered that you could press the sand into paper towel tubes to make a pillar.

Here are some things you can add to your dough:

For color:

Chlorella (for a nice deep green)

Cocoa (for a milk chocolate color)

Kool-Aid powder

Curry (for a specked yellow)

Paprika (for a specked orange)

For scent:

Orange essential oil

Grapefruit essential oil

Lemon essential oil

Lavender essential oilDSC06044

Have Fun!
